If you are exploring the Imereti region, Prometheus Cave (historically referred to as Kumistavi Cave) deserves a spot at the very top of your itinerary. The best part: you can reach this natural wonder entirely via comfortable public transit with Shevardeni — no rental car or expensive private tour packages required.
What is Prometheus Cave?
Prometheus Cave is one of Georgia's largest and most visually captivating karst cave systems, tucked into the scenic hills near Kumistavi village, just north of Tskaltubo. Opened to visitors in 2011, it offers an expansive underground realm of ancient stalactites, stalagmites, petrified waterfalls, and dramatic rock curtains.
Why it is a must-visit
- A fully paved 1.4 km walking trail through massive caverns enhanced with dynamic, colorful architectural illumination.
- An optional underground boat excursion navigating a subterranean river at the conclusion of the trail.
- A constant ~14 °C climate year-round — providing refreshing natural air conditioning during warm summer afternoons.
- Recognized as the signature natural landmark of the Imereti region, easily paired with a relaxing afternoon in Tskaltubo's central park.
How to reach the cave by bus
Your journey to the cave consists of two simple transit steps:
Step 1 — Kutaisi → Tskaltubo
From Kutaisi, take frequent routes №30, №34, or №36 operating continuously between Kutaisi Central Bus Station and Tskaltubo Bus Station (Butano).
Step 2 — Tskaltubo → Prometheus Cave
From Tskaltubo Central Bus Station (Butano), transfer to Route №42 (Tskaltubo – Prometheus Cave). Operating daily, the direct scenic ride takes only 20 minutes.
Route №42 — Departures: Tskaltubo Bus Station (Butano) → Prometheus Cave: 07:00 · 10:10 · 11:40 · 13:15 · 14:40 · 16:10
Route №42 — Return Departures: Prometheus Cave → Tskaltubo Bus Station (Butano): 09:30 · 11:00 · 12:45 · 14:00 · 15:30
Optimal Visiting Strategy
The cave generally welcomes visitors starting mid-morning. Therefore, catching the 10:10 departure (arriving roughly at 10:30) is the strategic sweet spot — allowing you to explore the illuminated chambers ahead of peak afternoon tour groups. The 11:40 service serves as an excellent secondary option.
Allocate approximately 1.5–2 hours for your complete site visit. A stress-free itinerary:
- Catch the 10:10 outbound (arrive ~10:30), enjoy the cave tour, and return via the 12:45 or 14:00 bus.
Critical Advisory: The final scheduled return bus departs the cave premises strictly at 15:30. Do not take the 16:10 outbound departure unless you have secured alternative private transportation for your return trip.
